DIY: Finding An Upholsterer
There's a lot of things to look for when finding someone you trust to reupholster your furniture. One of the best ways to go about it, is word of mouth from someone you trust. Before hiring an upholsterer also, it's best to ask for photos of their work or to go see it in their shop. Things you want to look for as signs they are good at what they do, is if the fabric has a repeat is to look at the pattern match up on the seams. You want the fabric to flow on the furniture and resemble one piece, instead of each fabric section looking like it completely does not belong with the other. Does the fabric lay smoothly and is not pulling?
If you go to an upholsterer room they can sometimes provide the service of making pillows at a lesser cost, though they are typically less refined. Another way to go about placing the fabric of your choosing on furniture is to go through the showroom. If a showroom has a piece of furniture you really love but you don't like the fabric then you can ask if they offer COM (customers own material), where you will send them the bolt of fabric you purchased from Focal fabrics to be applied for an upcharge typically. So, you walk into a store and say to yourself “oh I just love the build of that couch but I would rather a different fabric” then you ask for COM and if not you can purchase the couch and then take it to an upholsterer, COM saves you the trip of going to more than one place. The special thing about upholstering your own furniture is that it makes it uniquely yours and less likely to appear in other people's homes, one of a kind.
