Drapery or Romans?

Drapery

Should I get drapes or romans?

How much fabric should I use for drapes?

How much fabric should I order for window treatments?

The hanging window treatments can transfigure any given space by manipulating light to make a space feel larger or converting unfortunate views into beautiful spaces. There are some typical things interior designers recommend doing when going about finding the framing of different window treatments. If you want a window to feel larger, then it is best achieved with drapes.

When measuring a window for drapery, the frame work (wooden trim) should be included in the calculations, for the drapery rod brackets should be mounted a few inches out on either side of the window. Thus, when the drapery is pulled open, most of the window glass will be exposed to allow more natural light into your space. You also want the amount of fabric to be minimally, double the width of the window, so whether open or closed the softening effect of the fabric when it relaxingly falls is still maintained.

Traditionally roman shades are mounted within the window framework like a mini blind is typically installed, but if you want to maximize the natural light and view, the roman shade can be mounted above the window frame. If you are wanting to maximize the natural light and view, application for ceiling heights (8’), best to mount romans right at the ceiling. Higher ceiling heights 9’+ mount the romans a little bit above the window at a proportionally pleasing height. If the shade is mounted above the frame, then the stop point when pulled up should be a few inches minimally below the header of the window frame (basically a little over the glass). This will elongate the window, maximize the natural light and view, plus be aesthetically pleasing.

It's also beautiful to see the sun backlight the your fabric you have chosen which brings it to life, but some cases call for blackout lining especially in bedrooms. We suggest lining and interlining all romans. Interlining makes them have a fuller body and lay nicely when folding.
